Consultant to the board
Widow of Lindsay Thomas, Jr. PhD, founder of Abokin, Inc.,
Being able to serve as a medical missionary in Africa was a God given privilege for which I will be forever grateful. Countries served include: 1. The Ivory Coast as the School Health Officer in the city of Bouake: 2. In Ghana at the Kwahu SDA Hospital; in Nigeria at the Ile-Ife Adventist Hospital; and at our hospital in Lesotho, South Africa all in which I served as a relief physician. In Jamaica I served as a Team physician with Atlanta-Montego Bay Health Fair.
However, the most satisfying contribution to Women’s Health in Africa has been the formation of The Paps Team, International, which is the acronym for Professionals Analyzing Pap Smears.” The Team consisted of physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, cytotechnologists, and support personnel. Over 18,500 patients were screened by the Team with pap smears, diagnosed via colposcopy, and treated using cryosurgery and LEEP where indicated. Those patients who were beyond our capacity to treat were referred to the government hospital. The Team worked in five cities in different hospitals in Kenya and at the Adventist hospital in Malawi. Our Adventist Hospital at Malamulo in Malawi is currently screening for cervical cancer, treating where appropriate and referring patients when indicated. To God be the Glory!
